Entrepreneur Takes Steps to Success

September, 2014
Before opening her beauty salon, Teno Herrera knew she had the ability within herself, but the training she received through RDI’s Pasos al Éxito program provided the tools and the confidence she needed to get started. She attended the Pasos al Éxito Starting a Business @ Home course in 2012 in Ontario, OR. Teno knew she wanted to open her own business, and when she heard about the training through someone she knew, she jumped at the opportunity to attend.

Pasos al Éxito, Starting a Business @ Home, is for those interested and ready to learn how to effectively start or strengthen their own business. The sessions include experiential learning activities, facilitated discussion, guest speakers, and homework assignments. Teno appreciated the opportunity to learn about finances, the laws, and ways to save money, but there was something more. The program not only gave her the tools and knowledge she needed, it gave her the confidence to open her business and reinforced her belief that she could do it.

Teno opened Teno’s Beauty Salon in Ontario in 2013, and she continues to apply what she learned in the program on a daily basis, both in her business and in her personal life. The knowledge she gained about expenses, “everything counts and everything costs,” has become a habit for her. The program helped her better understand the value of saving money and helped her believe she could succeed. Teno believes anyone can do it if they have the resources and knowledge.

A two-year microenterprise development program, Pasos al Éxito builds the entrepreneurial capacity of rural Latino community participants in three ways: training in basic personal and business finance, instruction in starting a small microenterprise business, and access to support and resources as participants take their first steps toward success. Pasos al Éxito Money Smart and Starting a Business @ Home training are taking place this fall in Ontario and Milton-Freewater. If you are interested in learning more about bringing Pasos al Éxito to your community, contact Kristine Mier, email: kmier@rdiinc.org or phone: 612.432.6318.
